Kawasaki announces all-new 2022 KLR650
Kawasaki is bringing back its KLR650 big-bore dual-sport machine for 2022.
The all-new bike features a fuel-injected 652cc single-cylinder engine that promises to be a reliable performer. Kawasaki says the engine features a flat power curve that is well suited for tackling challenging roads or cruising at freeway speeds while also boasting increased mid-range power and torque.
The bike’s gas tank is the same size as the one that adorned the earlier version of the KLR650, which was last seen in 2018, but more of the fuel can be used because of a new fuel pump that draws gas from the very bottom of the tank. This, Kawasaki says, contributes to a longer cruising range.
The new KLR650 features 41mm forks with 7.9 inches of travel in front and an adjustable Uni-Trak gas-charged shock with 7.3 inches of travel in the back. Kawasaki says that “rear spring preload and rebound damping adjustments allow riders to fine-tune suspension settings to suit the riding conditions and rider’s preference. The front fork and rear shock settings complement each other for light, sharp handling on smooth roads while providing the capability needed off-road.”
The chassis includes several updates. For example, Kawasaki says the bike has a 30mm longer swingarm with a 2mm larger diameter swingarm pivot shaft that also contributes to better handling.
In addition, Kawasaki notes that several steps have been taken to improve shifting feel and reduce weight: The clutch release bearings were changed from ball to thrust-needle bearings, the gear dogs and shift fork have been revised on third gear and a new finishing treatment is now used for fourth and fifth gears.
Other improvements include new handlebar and foot peg positions for more comfort, new rubber mounts on the handlebars and footpegs, a taller windshield for increased wind protection and a shorter side stand.
Genuine accessories include side cases, engine guards, an LED auxiliary light set, a grip heater set, DC power outlet, USB socket and more.
The bike has a seat height of 34.3 inches, ground clearance of 8.3 inches, a curb weight of 460.6 pounds, a fuel capacity of 6.1 gallons and a wheelbase of 60.6 inches.
The 2022 KLR650 is available with optional ABS. The bike also comes in a TRAVELER model and ADVENTURE model.
