The history books were rewritten Saturday at the Daytona round of AMA Supercross.
After setting the high mark a year ago, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Eli Tomac continued his dominance at Daytona, winning it for a record seventh time. In the 250SX class, Team Honda HRC’s Hunter Lawrence made history by joining Team Honda HRC’s Jett Lawrence (2022) as the only brother duo to win the event.
While the spotlight ultimately went to Tomac, the 450SX action started early with an impressive performance in the heat races. Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s R.J. Hampshire, who currently sits in second in the 250SX West standings, made his jump to the 450SX class for the Daytona event.
The debut turned out to be a memorable one as Hampshire took first in his 450SX heat race. Hampshire finished eighth in the main event.
Once the 450SX main event began, it was a battle between the top three in the 450SX standings, and after multiple exchanges and tough riding, it was Tomac lighting the torches ahead of Red Bull KTM’s Cooper Webb and Team Honda HRC’s Chase Sexton.
In line with the Round 8 results, Tomac sits in the lead with 186 points while Webb (181) and Sexton (176) stay within striking distance.
While Hunter Lawrence did not grab the holeshot in the 250SX East main event, he led every lap on the way to his third victory of the season. His 99 points on the year give him a 14-point lead over Fire Power Honda’s Max Anstie who sits in second.
The season continues with a trip north for the Indianapolis round Saturday.
