Following a sixth-place finish in Anaheim, Calif., to open the 2022 AMA Supercross season, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Eli Tomac avenged his earlier performance with a win last Saturday at Anaheim 2.
Tomac’s Main Event ride started in the familiar sixth position, but he wasted no time making moves toward the front of the pack. In second place by Lap 5, Tomac capitalized on the lead rider’s mistake to take the lead and put distance between himself and the competition.
The veteran rider lit the candles as he crossed the finished line far ahead of the rest of the pack, securing the 38th win of his career and winning Round 4 by 4.6 seconds.
“It feels great to get this win,” Tomac said in a Yamaha Racing press release. “It also feels good to get this win for everyone behind me. The team has been working so hard, and what we’ve been able to do and how we’ve been able to improve each weekend is awesome. We’ve just been inching our way forward and fine-tuning every week, so it feels so good to get everyone that result that we all work for. The track was so cool, with really technical rhythm sections, and my motorcycle was so good tonight. I could put it wherever I wanted to — inside, outside — and it was good for the distance, so that’s exciting for us.”
Tomac’s first win of the season pushed his season total to a 450SX-leading 85 points, ahead of both Honda HRC’s Chase Sexton (79) and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jason Anderson (77). Sexton and Anderson finished third and second respectively in Round 4.
The AMA Supercross season continues Saturday when the riders take off inside State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
