AMA recognizes 2020 Monster Energy AMA Supercross champions and award winners
Tomac, Ferrandis, Sexton earn class titles; Davalos, Shimoda named rookies of the year
Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, presented AMA National No. 1 plates to Eli Tomac, Dylan Ferrandis and Chase Sexton this past weekend at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.
Tomac captured his first premier class AMA 450SX championship, completing the 17-race season with 25 more points, 384 to 359, than the defending series champion, Red Bull KTM rider Cooper Webb. Tomac, the 27-year-old Monster Energy Kawasaki rider, won seven main events, and he finished on the podium in six of the seven races held in Utah.
Both the 250SX West and 250SX East titles also were decided in Salt Lake City. In the Western Region category, 26-year-old Frenchman Ferrandis earned his second consecutive title, this one by a 20-point margin over Justin Cooper.
Sexton, likewise, defended his AMA Supercross No. 1 plate, the 20-year-old Honda rider scoring 9 more points than Shane McElrath, who, like Ferrandis and Cooper, raced a Yamaha. The 250SX East final results, however, remain provisional due to a pending protest.
After the coronavirus pandemic interrupted AMA Supercross in early March, series promoter Feld Entertainment followed federal, state and local guidelines to restart competition in Utah with a two-race-per-week, no-spectator format. Mitigation efforts during the series of events included prescreening, temperature checks, testing, face masks and physical distancing.
“The AMA extends its congratulations to the riders, teams and support staff, many of whom worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the AMA Supercross series on track and finish the season on a high note in Salt Lake City,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “We are grateful for their vigilance in these challenging times.”
AMA Supercross Rookie of the Year awards are presented to first-year riders who accumulate the most points in their respective classes. KTM rider Martin Davalos is the 450SX AMA Rookie of the Year, and Honda rider Jo Shimoda is the 250SX AMA Rookie of the Year. Davalos ended the season 13th in 450SX points; Shimoda was third in 250SX West rankings.
“Both Martin and Jo showed increased consistency and confidence each time they took to the race track,” said AMA Supercross Manager Mike Pelletier. “I am proud to say the future of Supercross looks bright.”
